Books for Forest School - Start of Summer

We have a lot of favourite Forest School stories. So many stories! Here are a couple that are perfect for families on summer vacation, or for use with outdoor day camps.

Berry Song, written and illustrated by Michaela Goade has a rhythmic pace to it that make it an easy read aloud. The text highlights the relationship of the harvester to the land, while the illustrations have plenty for the young reader to discover on their own as the seasons turn and time passes. Don’t forget to peek under the dust cover for a surprise illustration!

Choose this book before going berry picking at a farm or in the wild, or use it to start a conversation about caring for the land and letting the land care for you.

The Camping Trip, written and illustrated by Jennifer K Mann is a delightful adventure story. Students love how relatable the character is, from her excitement, midnight nerves, and pack that has too many snacks for the hike. The illustrations capture the experience perfectly, and you have to agree that s’mores are indeed scrumptious.

Read this book before (or during) a family camping trip, or read it to inspire camping-related play such as making pretend fires, building shelters, or going on a little hike.

The Hike, written and illustrated by Alison Farrell, is another book that’s great to read before setting off on summer adventures. A hike can feel like a slog with kids who wish they weren’t there, but the characters in The Hike can inspire them to find their own fun. I love how each of the three children has their own strength, from poetry to mapmaking to plant and animal identification. Read this book for enjoyment, or write your own version featuring the hikers in your family and some places and events from your own hike!

Do you have a favourite start of summer picture book you love to share with young children?
